Note: In a career context, all numbers are restricted between 0 and 5. However, in a match context, the numbers are not restricted.
For simplicity, we are changing the scale here in the report and expressing every Match Impact number as a percentage. The maximum percentage (100) is assigned to the highest impact player of the match. All other players in the match are scaled relative to him. Negative Match Impact indicates that not only did the player not contribute in the match, but he also had an adverse effect on his team’s chances.

Scorecard

Playing at their new home in Kanpur, Gujarat Lions cruised to a six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday (19 May).

Suresh Raina’s batting pipped Dwayne Smith’s bowling heroics as he finished as the highest impact player of the match. He was also the highest impact batsman.

Raina walked-in to bat under pressure (GL lost Smith to the first ball of the chase) and helped steady the chase with the hosts at a tricky 38 for 3 in the fourth over. Building partnerships, he proceeded to top-score (53 not out off 36 balls) and successfully saw through the chase. It was Raina’s first very high impact performance in this edition of the IPL.

Smith, meanwhile, was the highest impact bowler for his pressure-building four top/middle-order wickets in the evening’s most restrictive spell (4-8 off four overs). It was the highest impact bowling performance of his T20 career.

Raina’s innings had a higher impact than Smith’s effort given the context of the match as batting was the harder/trickier discipline.

As many as seven players from KKR failed tonight; GL had four such players.
