South Africa defeated a spirited Afghanistan by 37 runs at the Wankhede on Sunday (20 Mar).

Mohammad Shahzad was the highest impact player, and batsman, of the match for his attacking innings. While he was only the third-highest scorer in the match, his early onslaught rattled the much vaunted Protea pace battery. His impact with the bat edged AB de Villiers’.

Set a daunting 210, Afghanistan’s chase was launched by Shahzad – their highest Chasing Impact batsman. Scoring at a frenetic pace (high Strike Rate Impact ), he was the first man to be dismissed but Afghanistan had already raced to 52 in just four overs. His innings (44 off 19) had Partnership-Building Impact too.

Furthermore, Shahzad was also effective behind the stumps – he claimed one catch, effected a run out and didn’t allow any byes past him.

Chris Morris was the highest impact bowler of the match. He was also South Africa’s highest impact player. Morris took four wickets, of which three were top/middle order. His dismissal of Shahzad had Partnership-Breaking Impact , and his spell had the second-highest Economy Impact in the match (behind Imran Tahir).

Based on the performance of both teams, South Africa had a 27% higher impact than Afghanistan in the match. As many as nine South African players had a Match Impact of at least 1 (the minimum for a performance to not be deemed as a failure) while Afghanistan had seven such players.
