Note: In a career context, all numbers are restricted between 0 and 5. However, in a match context, the numbers are not restricted.
For simplicity, we are changing the scale here in the report and expressing every Match Impact number as a percentage. The maximum percentage (100) is assigned to the highest impact player of the match. All other players in the match are scaled relative to him. Negative Match Impact indicates that not only did the player not contribute in the match, but he also had an adverse effect on his team’s chances.

Scorecard

In a battle of bottom-ranked teams, Royal Challengers Bangalore edged spirited hosts Kings XI Punjab by a solitary run on Monday (9 May).

Murali Vijay’s lone hand with the bat (57-ball-89) saw him emerge as the highest impact player, and batsman, of the match. Contributing to 51% of the chase and building partnerships in the process, he was the top-scorer and took KXIP to within a whisker of a thrilling win.

That the win did not materialise had a lot to do with Shane Watson – the highest impact bowler of the match – who claimed two top/middle-order wickets (and broke a partnership) in a highly restrictive spell. The penultimate over, which was bowled by him, cost just seven runs. His effort, 2-22 off four overs, saw him walk away with the ‘Man of the match’ award as well.

Based on the performances of both teams, it was actually Kings XI Punjab who had a 3% higher impact than Royal Challengers Bangalore in the match – an indicator of how close the encounter turned out to be. KXIP had four players who failed in the match, while RCB had five such players.
